Federal Judge Dismisses California Challenge to Trump Tariff Authority
A federal judge dismissed California’s lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump’s tariff policy.
The U.S. District Court Judge ruled on June 2, 2025 that the state did not have jurisdiction to sue Trump in the Northern District of California. The U.S. Department of Justice had argued that the case belonged in the Court of International Trade in New York.
Attorney General Rob Bonta filed the lawsuit April 16, 2025, arguing that Trump’s tariffs announced April 2, 2025 are not authorized under the International Economic Emergency Powers Act (IEEPA).
The ruling is not related to the tariff challenges before the Court of International Trade and the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
Bonta appealed the decision to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
